That’s exactly the opposite outcome I’d been hoping for. ![]() I’ve labored through 14 Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, and while some have been enjoyable, mostly the reading has left me feeling depressed and dispirited. Turns out America has always been this racist. A mistake we would all learn from and, over time, be the better for having overcome. ![]() I dove into my reading with excitement, expecting to find pages of evidence that America had, in fact always been great, and that this whole President Trump situation was an egregious anomaly. I wanted to believe a happy ending was still possible-I wondered if one had ever been possible at all. I wanted to uncover some secret thread in the fabric of the American narrative that would make sense of a post-Trump nation. I started this Pulitzer reading journey in the hopes that it would give me hope. ![]()
